The Secretaria Municipal de Cultura do Rio de Janeiro (SMC) (Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Rio de Janeiro) formulates, executes and evaluates public policies relating to culture in the city. Its mission is to promote the development of Rio's culture as a whole, as well as its symbolic, economic and civic role.

Culture is a right of all of Rio's citizens - It plays a fundamental role in the city's social life and contributes decisively to the construction of the city's image and identity.

The main objectives of the SMC are to expand and boost cultural production, democratize access to culture, encourage and protect cultural diversity, and to enhance and disseminate carioca culture in the city, across Brazil and around the world.
