Huet presented Emperor Dom Pedro II a report back in 1855 revealing his intention to set up the institution, and it was received well.

The imperial government supported the idea and appointed Marquês de Abrantes to closely monitor the first school for the deaf in Brazil.

INES began operating in 1856, and has helped deaf and mute people ever since.

Today, INES promotes forums, publishes detailed reports on scientific findings, holds seminars, and offers advisory services throughout Brazil.

The institution and the people operating within it have access to quality teaching materials and systems that are distributed to schools to help the disadvantaged.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
