the federal university of rio de janeiro or ufrj, located in the northern part of the city, is the largest federal university in brazil, and is considered one of the top universities in the country.  

the university also manages the national museum/ufrj, (museu national) the oldest scientific institution in brazil housing the largest collection in all of latin america.

the rural federal university of rio de janeiro, or universidade federal rural do rio de janeiro, known commonly by its acronym, ufrrj, is a rural university specialized in a variety of courses in agronomy, biology, forestry, veterinary sciences and other related careers.    

it is located about 80 km west from the city of rio and in addition to bachelors, masters and phd degrees, the university offers several specialized courses in agro ecology and agribusiness management and strategy.
