beyond temporary and permanent visas, foreign nationals can apply for Brazilian naturalization if they have lived in brazil for a continuous period of at least four years, have no criminal record, and can read and write portuguese, among other requirements. the residency period can be reduced to only one, two or three years in some cases, and there are fewer requirements for those who have lived in brazil for at least fifteen years. the Registro Nacional de Estrangeiros - rne is the identity card required by all foreign nationals who plan to stay in the country of Brazil for more than the 90 day visa period, and not as tourist but as legal residents with authorization to work. Upon arrival a foreigner has 30 days in which to register his or her intent to stay with the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) and request a RNE. |
