while carnival remains the most internationally recognized event in rio, new year's eve celebrations are also spectacular and becoming ever more famous. on december 31st, two million revelers dress in white and gather on copacabana beach to enjoy music concerts and magnificent fireworks.

in addition to carnival and new year's eve celebrations, rio is also home to a variety of other events throughout the year.  events range from huge concerts such as 'rock in rio,'  fashion events such as 'rio fashion week,' cultural events such us the 'rio de janeiro film festival', and a variety of sporting and business events.

the carioca love for celebrations mean that the city is well equipped to host such significant international events as the world youth day of 2013, the fifa soccer forld cup in 2014 and the 2016 olympic games.
