the less developed areas are located mainly in the northern and western sides of rio, while the wealthiest districts are located in the south side, near the beaches - interestingly, some of rio's less afluent neighborhoods are also concentrated on the hillside of the south side, alongside the posh and wealthy neighborhoods of the region.
