the presidential palace (palácio do catete), home to the museu da república, is the most important cultural visit in the neighborhood - located at 153 catete street (rua do catete 153), the palace is now commonly called the museum of the republic, where visitors can tour the palace garden as well as view the historic presidential meeting rooms.

many visit the museum due to the event that emptied the palace, which was the suicide of president getúlio vargas - this took place on the third floor of the palace, inside the president's bedroom.

after the death of president vargas, his predecessor did not occupy the palace, nor did any other future president - still, some municipal buildings and offices are located catete to this day.
