at a glance

Since the beginning of the urbanization of the city, in the second half of the 16th Century, these territories made up the paths to the lands of the sugar mills in the area today known as zona sul - during the 18th Century, these routes took on a role of major importance for accessing established fortifications for defense against foreign invasion; during the 19th Century, the areas became the location for the establishment of large farms and country houses; with the advent of the Republic, everything began to evolve around the political decisions that ruled the country.

It was during this time, that the neighborhoods of catete, glória and flamengo turned into regions of great historical significance - Transformations took place changing palaces into houses, vilas into bungalos, Art Déco structures into modern buildings, so that today the 'Space of the Republic' reveals the many different periods through which the city passed, its achievements and failures, fantasies, daydreams and realities.     arrow-back      arrow-forward
