the neighborhood remained relatively calm until the first half of the twentieth century, when large favelas were erected along the banks of the lagoon, which developed into some of the largest in the city, housing more than 85,000 people. another significant change to the neighborhood occured in 1968, when the government ordered the relocation of the favela residents of the area, and in their place built a number of parks and some of the city's most luxurious housing. this initiative came in response to the heavy rains of 1967 and 1968, which caused the death of 300 people due to crumbling rocks and poorly constructed housing on the city's hills. | centro | |||
