meteorites can be examined and the structures and shapes of confirmed extra-terrestrial materials are on display. however, the museum's main attraction is its permanent exhibition called 'in the time of dinosaurs' which looks at the earth's early days and exhibits dinosaur fossils.

in addition, exhibitions on the origin of the universe, the formation of planet earth, the solar system and the fossilization process can be seen. the collection is the outcome of several generations of work by brazil's geoscientists.

other important presences in urca are the escola de guerra naval - egn (navy's school of command and staff), the escola superior de guerra - esg (army school of command and staff), the instituto militar de engenharia - ime (militar engineering institute), the centro brasileiro de pesquisas físicas - cbpf (the brazilian center for physics research).
