in the late 19th century a tunnel was built under the mountains connecting botafogo and copacabana, developing the south zone towards the atlantic ocean - with the administration of mayor pereira passos this area, including copacabana, ipanema and leblon, was further modernized. zona sul subsequently became a modern, rich and fashionable region of rio to which visitors began to flock - it is this concentration of wealth that cuases this region to have the most malls, hotels and restaurants, as well as a large number of important museums or historical sites. |
