It hosts a wide array of exhibitions, films and concerts. Notable amongst these is Um Passeio Pelo Rio (A trip through Rio), which displays drawings, watercolors and prints of Rio in the mid-19th Century, to commemorate the city's 450th anniversary.

The institute has developed and published photo books, literature, and a magazine on contemporary photography. The magazine, entitled Zum, is a superb, pioneering publication, showcasing some of the nation's most creative contemporary photographs.

The Museu da Imagem e do Som (Museum of Image and Sound) was inaugurated in 1965 as part of the celebrations for the fourth centenary of Rio de Janeiro.
