on january 1st, most shops, restaurants, and bars will be closed throughout rio de janeiro, as the majority o cariocas traditionally choose to spend this day at home with their families. even popular restaurants in areas like copacabana and ipanema are closed on january 1st, exception made for bars and diners located inside the major hotels. shopping malls and supermarkets do not open until january 2nd, so it is important to plan ahead. there are a limited number of taxis servicing the city, thus anyone flying out of rio on the 1st should book rides in advance. |
