at a glance

While personal safety remains a concern in most metropolises, in Rio basic precautions must be taken to adapt to the very things that make the city the wonderful destination it is known to be - the varied topography, the interaction between city and nature, tropical climate and prolonged partying should be a visitor's primary thought.  Very simple, yet important safety measures should include wearing a hat, using sunscreen and insect repellant, using appropriate shoes for each situation, staying hydrated, respecting beach warnings, and avoiding excessive drinking and illegal behavior.

The city is very clear on what is permitted by law and what is not, violating basic safety guidelines will inevitably result in undesirable situations - what is permitted in other parts of the world is not necessarily legal in Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro specifically is in fact a complex city that demands intelligent behavior, common sense and obedience to the law.

The laid-back reputation of the city, and the festive mood that permeates Rio de Janeiro, should not be confused with a license to misbehave, break rules and regulations, and partake in dubious activities.  Visitors who disregard local legislations and guidelines put themselves in a position of risk and, often,  make it impossible for authorities to prevent problems and undesirable situations.    arrow-back      arrow-forward
