at a glance

while tobacco certainly forms a part of the country's production, it has never grown larger than .7% of the country's total cultivated area - this may not seem like much in the grand scheme of tobacco's economic production, yet the brazilian government has still made relatively unsuccessful attempts at reducing its production even further.

the southeast grows the tobacco used in cigarettes, while in the northeast produce a darker, air-cured and sun-cured tobacco that is most often used in cigars, twists, and dark cigarettes.

in portuguese, a cigar is called charuto and a cigarette is called cigarro, which can be found at most newstands and corner bars throughout rio de janeiro - in fact, single cigarettes are a very common purchase, and for convenience, there is usually a lighter attached to a rope in the store for smokers to light them.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
