only actively used as a monastery in the century after its construction in 1763, săo bernardino was used as an orphanage between 1931 and 1940 before reverting to its original role, and then being enshrined around the same time as nossa senhora do carmo.
the igreja matriz de nossa senhora da conceiçăo adjoins silvestre travassos plaza in the heart of the city, and is arguably the most opulent church in angra - the church was inaugurated in 1750, though construction began more than 100 years before, and it became a historical site in 1954.
perhaps the most unique church around is the ermida do senhor do bonfim, which occupies much of a tiny island facing bonfim beach - originally built in 1780, the church is a lovely piece of colonial architecture backed by a patch of trees and surrounded by clear blue waters, and it hosts masses exclusively during the month of may.
