fortunately, with the inauguration of the road connecting angra dos reis with santos, another city with an important seaport, the tourism industry took notice and started to develop the newly accessible area.

while in the past angra dos reis was famous among pirates for its abundant supply of food and water, the town is known today for its beauty and the mystic aura that permeates some of its streets.  

today angra dos reis prides itself for having 365 islands, one for each day of the year, including the world famous ilha grande - the ferry terminal, located in the bay of ilha grande, bustles with eager riders seeking to visit those many islands, and ilha grande in particular.

the jet set also discovered this picturesque and tranquil paradise, and in fact many of the smaller islets in the region are now private - the majority of islands are accessible to all via tour boat, while others are home to the private mansions of the rich and famous - routinely docking their yachts at praia do dentista (dentist's beach).
