one of our absolute favorite parts of ilha grande, lopes mendes beach is on the east end of the island, with an almost three kilometer extension of fine white sand bordered by thick tropical vegetation and the reputation of being the most beautiful and calm coves.

the complete absence of commercial developments, and its strong waves in shallow waters, make it a favorite among surfers as well - at one end of the beach is a giant buoy that fell from a passing ship and washed up on the shore and has since been painted by local artists. 

near the buoy is a freshwater stream that drains water from the marshes further inland - not advisable for drinking, but definitely handy for washing off the sea salt on hot days.
