at a glance

one of the most significant moments in the history of maricá was in 1887, when a group named 'filhos de maricá' (sons of maricá) took charge of getting a stretch or railway built.

in 1889, a railroad was inaugurated, joining small adjacent communities, until the federal government further developed the railways to reach niterói and cabo frio, where maricá's fishermen could now easily bring fish to be sold on the local markets - this also helped the local economy by permitting the sale of locally grown bananas in more towns.

often visited in the past by famous artists, writers, scientists, and political figures such as princess isabel and dom joão vi. king of portugal, today maricá remains a precious getaway, very close to rio de janeiro capital.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
