during the segunda revolta da armada (second brazilian navy revolt) in 1893, the church's bell tower was hit by a naval canon, knocking a statue to the ground below, from a height of 25 meters, but with little resulting damage.   

the lack of significant damage to the satue was considered miracolous, and today visitors to the church may view both - the statue and the projectile.
