most visitors to rio are familiar with the giant christ statue overlooking rio de janeiro as a symbol of faith, but not many know that the pedestal of the statue is actually a small and fully functional chapel.

this chapel was consecrated in 2006 by the archbishop eusebio oscar scheid, making the statue of christ as a whole a sanctuary - the santuário cristo redentor.

38 meters tall, on the peak of morro do corcovado at 709 meters above the sea level, the statue of cristo redentor (christ the redeemer) is located in the alto da boa vista  neighborhood, and it offers spectacular views of rio de janeiro.
