in 1973 it was declared to be a national heritage site by the institute of historical patrimony and, in 2006, it was elevated to the status of sanctuary. the small santuário cristo redentor, is accessible via the back of the pedestal of the statue, and it is open to the public daily.

small ceremonies are held here with frequency, and  the small chapel inside is  used to celebrate weddings and baptisms, under the archdiocese of rio de janeiro.
