in 2006 the church was closed for restoration, including the complete restoration of the spectacular rococo-style interior, the painted ceiling and the baroque stone façade, costing r$11.5 million - it reopened in march 2008 to mark the celebration of the 200 year anniversary of the arrival of the portuguese court.  in addition to the revitalization of the structure, an archaeological museum was created, along with a remarkable sound and light show and a training program for both teachers and students.
