at a glance

arguably the first brazilian folk music of the digital age, baile funk arose, much as choro did, with cariocas playing european and american dance standards against local rhythmic traditions - though in the late 1980s it was german electro and miami bass music instead of the polka and the waltz.

the name, like that of pagode, comes not from the music itself, but from the parties from whence it was born - the all-night bacchanals thrown by gangs and local celebrities in the favelas of rio de janeiro.

in the years following the turn of the millennium, baile funk has developed, like all other brazilian folk musics, signature rhythms, iconic artists and sonic trademarks that mark it as a uniquely carioca art form.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
