in the neighboring city of niterói, on the eastern shore of the guanabara bay, stands one of the visual landmarks of rio de janeiro state - the contemporary art museum, better known as mac. the structure is considered a monument as much as a museum.

designed by world renowned brazilian architect oscar niemeyer, most observes will notice its striking resemblance to a flying saucer - yet, according to niemeyer himself, the shape of the museum was inspired by the image of a flower emerging from the rock that holds it.

throughout his long career niemeyer designed over 500 buildings and projects in both brazil and abroad. he reportedly said, that of all his work the museu de arte contemporanea de niteróiwas one of his personal favorites.
