at a glance

700 meters long and 14 meters wide, the sambadromo is a big and impressive structure, sporting a parade ground surrounded by the grand stands, from where the public can watch the show and displays. most of this area was refurbished in 2011, to allow more spectator space, raising the maximum attendance to 75.000 people.

the whole structure ends in an ample plaza, covered by a large concrete arc which gives it a very distinctive look. this area is called apotheosis plaza and it is where the samba parades officially end in a final display of sound and color - although better known for its role in the carnival, the apotheosis plaza has revealed to be very versatile during its service life. its implication in the samba parades is not limited to carnival either, as it serves as a samba school and general practice area for most of the year. arrow-back     arrow-forward
