the grandiose catedral metropolitana, in rio de janeiro's historical são sebastião neighborhood, is one of the most holy sites, in a country that highly values religion. built between 1964 and 1979, the cathedral is a mammoth conical structure, measuring 75 meters externally, and 64 meters internally, with a huge capacity of 20 thousand people standing.

designed with multicolored stained glass windows, running from the floor to the ceiling, the cathedral is blessed with stunning natural lighting, which changes throughout the day. at night artificial multi-colored lighting makes it the most visible landmark in the district.

the circular shape of the cathedral was contrived to signify the equidistance and proximity of people in relation to god, whilst the ultimate symbol of catholicism, the cross hovers above the high alter.
