the point of interest known as the
ponte dos jesuitas (jesuit's
bridge) once had a more colorful name having to do with pigeons -
the ponte do guandu. it is on the estrada do curtume (tannery
road) in the city of santa cruz.
it was built in 1752 by jesuits using stone and mortar, which
was made with local sand and oyster shells. the bridge is actually a
bridge-damn which serves the purpose of controlling and crossing the
waters of the guandu river.
