the
society of jesus was a large world-wide order
- its members, the
jesuit priests, worked their royal land grants and developed large
and profitable plantations. in 1759 their lands were confiscated and they
were banished from brazil by the marquês de pombal.
the jesuits' prosperity and growing economic power were
considered a threat and all of their assets reverted to the
portuguese crown - the bridge is one of their enduring legacies.
