erected in 1862, in memory of a more historical figure, the much-revered dom pedro i, the monumento a dom pedro i was the first statue in the city of rio de janeiro. located in the praça tiradentes, a grand square in the center of the city, the statue was made by french sculptor lois rochet. large poles, street lamps, and railings surround the statue, in a hope of emulating the style in many parisian squares. the statue itself depicts dom pedro i on his horse, and is adorned with shields and gold stars, to represent the provinces of brazil.

as well as the classical monuments in memory of artist, politicians, and historical figures, rio is also teeming with a whole host of a different type of man-made monuments, from religious buildings to sporting arenas, engineering marvels to military forts - there is a huge variety of masterpieces with aesthetic, cultural and historic value spread across the city.
