at a glance

the birds, monkeys, and reptiles, among various other species each have a special relationship to the vegetation, with important roles in the pollination of flowers, and dispersion of fruits and seeds, among others. these are species that in some cases are very site-specific - for example, the mico leao dourado lives in only one specific area in the atlantic forest in the state of rio de janeiro, while others are concentrated primarily in other regions of the country.

the atlantic rainforest is the one biome that is most at risk in contemporary brazil - a study by the organization sos mata atlântica and the national institute of species research, revealed that the deforestation in the area between 2011 and 2012 affected approximately 235 square kilometers, with 219 square kilometers of vegetation lost. arrow-back     arrow-forward
