the most common area of the forest is the dense rainforest areas, which are characterized by warm and humid coastal regions, without systematic dry periods. this is the most diffuse type of forest in rio and it is found in both the parque national da tijuca and the parque estadual da pedra branca.

also present in these parks is the mixed rainforest, known as mixed dense forest or araucária moist forest, quite common in the rio region, especially in the serra da mantiqueira.

in the interior of the state,  open evergreen forest areas can be found -  this is the type of forest that was most reduced in recent times and is no longer common in rio.
