the city became part of the brazilian imperial municipality from 1822 to 1889 and is surrounded by a number of parks and nature reserves. mountains frame the city, some rising as high as 1,300 meters above sea level, covered in tropical rainforest.

the serra da bocaina national park, serro do mar state park, and joatinga reserve park are all located very close to paraty, making it an incredibly beautiful area.
