samba became very popular outside of brazil thanks in a large part to hollywood and the 1933 movie 'flying down to rio' with fred astaire and ginger rogers, who are actually dancing the 'carioca' and not the samba - however, carmen miranda would wow audiences with an actual samba dance, fruit and all, to the song 'chica chica boom chic,' in the 1941 movie 'that night in rio.'
