there are a variety of beaches in rio de janeiro, mostly differing along three dimensions:  the size of the sand area, the body of water they face, and the surrounding infrastructures.

rio's beaches face either guanabara bay, sepetiba bay, or the atlantic ocean.

while bay waters are much calmer, the quality of the water is lower than the water of the beaches facing the atlantic ocean.
