most beaches in rio have kiosks along their promenades, exception made for some minor continental beaches on paquetá, ilha do governador, and some of the wild beaches in the zona oeste. along copacabana beach, there are two types of kiosks - the 'classic' kiosks, and their more modern replacements.

beloved by all cariocas, and very characteristic of rio, classic kiosks are simple square wooden frames with a pyramid-shape roof and plastic chairs - they usually only accept cash and offer a basic menu of ice-creams, sandwiches, and caipirinhas.

what classic kiosks do offer, and that is not always offered by modern kiosks, is fresh coconut water right inside green coconuts. a must try while in rio, coconut water is drank with a straw, then the coconut is cut into slices by the waiter at the kiosk, and the white part can be eaten using a spoon made on the spot using the coconut itself.     arrow-back      arrow-forward
