ilha do governador is an important district of rio de janeiro, located less than a kilometer off the eastern shore of rio's mainland, the island belongs to the zona norte (north zone) and is home to 14 seperate bairros (neighborhoods). it is home to approximately 250.000 people, rich commerce and industries, as well as rio de janeiro's international airport. with a size of 42 square kilometers, it is the largest island in the guanabara bay. the island was named in honor of salvador corrêa de sá, who in 1568 became governor of the province of rio de janeiro.
