at a glance

today the beaches of ilha do governador are not usually found on any touristic map, but this was not always the case - in fact, not long ago the island still had beautiful sandy shores accompanied by gorgeous, panoramic views.

four main events shaped the recreational use of the island - in mid nineteenth century, many of the beaches on the island were a popular destination for locals and visitors, used as family gatherings and variety of watersports.

since 1922, the island was connected to the city via a tram, which increased its popularity as a fun and convenient getaway. in 1946 some of the beaches were transformed into military areas, and access to some of the shores was limited or forbidden at that time. beaches like praia dos golfinhos, praia brava, praia do alentejo, and praia da moça became for exclusive use of the navy and their families.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
