ilha do governador is home to to one of rio de janeiro's two airports. the Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, also commonly reffered to as the 'Galeão', is in many ways the gateway to the city of rio for many domestic and international visitors and a routine stop over for travelers flying on to the cities of belo horizonte, brasilia, and são paulo. Galeão's history dates back to the early 1900s, with the construction of the city's first aviation school in 1916 at ilha do governador. a decade later it was transferred to a larger space, at the ponta do Galeão. over time the school developed further and expanded its facilities to accommodate training, administration, and the first national aircraft factory - it was here that the first brazilian model, muniz 5, was built. |
