in 1924, the Naval Aviation School was transferred to Galeão, and During the Second World War it was used continually as air base during army operations, but it also began to be used as a landing field for international aircrafts - As a result, in 1950 its arrivals and departures facility was expanded to create the current Terminal 1. It was only in 1977 however, that the Rio de Janeiro International Airport was opened - Terminal 2, one of the most modern and technologically advanced in Latin America, was opened in 1999. In the same year, the airport adopted the denomination of the famous bossa nova artist, Antonio Carlos Brasileiro Almeida Jobim, who directly mentioned the airport in his well loved song, 'Samba do Avião' (samba of the airplane) - He sings, 'dentro de mais um minuto estaremos no Galeão', or 'within a minute we'll be in Galeão'. | arpoador | |||
