at a glance

music and artistic expression was used in rio as 'unarmed resistance', leading even famous artists to be jailed for political reasons - in 1968, even the very famous caetano veloso and gilberto gil were arrested and jailed for two months, and charged with disrespecting the brazilian flag and the national anthem.

as the dictatorship tried to silence it, samba became a symbol of such resistance - born in the favelas of rio de janeiro, it was now ever more present in all social classes and media.

being blocos traditionally satirical against the political class, it was only naturally that they started to incorporate the rebellious samba into their marches and masquerades. arrow-back     arrow-forward
