opened in 1970, in cooperation with rio de janeiro's department of culture, the planetário has the aim of spreading astronomy, and related sciences, to develop cultural projects - the foundation has two separate sites, but the headquarters are located in the lush gávea neighborhood.

an impressive complex, the gávea site has a total area of 16 thousand meters, with numerous facilities and activities to facilitate a fertile learning experience - the main attractions of the planetarium are its two large domes, which use extensive hi-tech equipment, capable of projecting nine thousand stars.
