Checkers has a long history of success in Brazil since the first arrival of the Portuguese to this continent - Modern times, however, have seen the rise of checkers as a sport only in the end of the year of 1988.

Slightly simpler than chess, but just as involving, checkers is incredibly addictive and challenging, especially if one desires to participate or watch one of the checkers tournaments that happen all across Rio.

The game has two main modalities which differ only in the number of pieces and size of the board: one with a 64 squares board and another with a 100 squares board - Both are regularly played in Rio, although the 64 squares version is more easily found for using the same surface as the one used for chess.

The associations that organize, broadcast and regulate checkers tournaments in Rio are the Confederação Brasileira de Jogo de Damas (Brazilian confederation of Checkers) founded in Niterói, and in a smaller scale, associação de jogo de damas tradicinal in Copacabana (Copacabana traditional checkers association).
