at a glance

when leaving a restaurant, and in case of rain, the male is expected to get the umbrella ready, and using it for shelter when the couple is outside - most restaurants have a place to keep umbrellas at the front of the establishment.

when entering or exiting a restaurant in the presence of an older person, it is expected for the younger to open the doors and follow the elder - who will also be choosing the seat first, and generally should be accommodated facing the room, with his or her shoulders to the wall.

the majority of cariocas will not hold a visitor at fault if any of these rules is broken, however it is always much appreciated by the locals when these manners are indeed followed.    arrow-back     arrow-forward
