at a glance

tourists are permitted access to the emergency rooms of the public hospitals, however, for further or specialist treatment, they would usually need to be a resident in the city.

the private hospitals are also open for all, and are known to offer a complete and quick service, often they may be relatively more expensive than the public hospitals, so tourists and short-time visitors may consider a travel insurance policy before travelling to rio.

residents of the city are permitted to use any of the public hospital facilities, and receive the necessary treatment, whilst many have access to the private facilities through private health plans from their employers, or from insurance policies.

to access the facilities, including the emergency rooms, residents and brazilian citizens are required to present a sistema único de saúde (sus) card, and an identification card.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
