journalism is one of the riskiest and at the same time most rewarding and interactive careers one can undertake.

journalist in rio de janeiro have for a long time been putting their lives on the line,  covering true stories often as incredible as the most daring of fiction - in a continuous effort to improve the city.

this bravery has rewarded them and they are among the outstanding journalists the world over.

renata affonso hails from rio de janeiro and travels all around the world in search of developing stories - her main aim is to shed light to all the social issues that affects the lives of ordinary citizens which for different purposes by powerful groups may be better when untold.

having been in the industry for more than 2 decades has had impacts to her life as well to the life of others.

having anchored for some years at channel 11 and later progressing to be an editor of the popular debate program 'sala de noticias', affonos has grown from that journalist that always focuses on war and violence to an enlightened one focusing more on social issues and this she says has impacted her career positively.

from focusing on small social issues in rio, she has now evolved to an international journalist and is scheduled to participate in the upcoming vaccine program for hiv in bangkok, thailand held by the national press foundation.

investigative reporting has stirred some mixed emotions among brazilians with some viewing it as too exposing while a majority appreciating it.

this puts on the spot mauri konig who is one of the most established investigative reporters in rio de janeiro after practicing more than two decades of journalism in brazil.

one of the most notable reports that mauri has ever come up with was a 2004/2005 report which brought to light how adolescents are trafficked for sex in cuba.

this article which was published in curitiba's daily known as gazeta do povo led to the arrest of a key player in the traffic. he has also done some articles that highlighted how kids are kidnapped from brazil and then recruited in the paraguay military. this put his life in danger and after a death-beating and consequential death threats, he dropped on that report and never published it.

in appreciation of journalists and their impacts on the society, abraji was formed and this grouped aimed at protecting journalists and ensuring for a fair ground where they can cover their stories.

it was formed in the late 2002. its formation was inspired by the tragic killing of one of the iconic reports, tim lopes who was covering a story which was exposing how children were being exploited in rio's shanty towns which are also known as favelas.

these are worst drug-trade hit areas and pose a significant threat to the world cup scheduled for 2016.

upp is a safety program for the favelas which was started after the diligent and brave works by rio journalists.

it aims at making them safe for tourists and local groups including journalists.

some of the measures introduced in favelas are: promotion of education, there is introduction of a garbage collection in an effort of making the favelas cleaner.

electricity is also being distributed to light up the favelas and reduce criminal activities. rafael fabres is currently doing a report about favelas and the impacts of the upp since its introduction.
