politics can have dire influence in a country's and for that fact city's development. for a good course, there can be immense contributions that can be witnessed in a country. at its worst, the damages are only left for imaginations. well true to say, politics in rio has had a fair share of both but taking a closer look, the advantages outweigh the shortcomings of politics, these all depends with the politicians in power.

from the times of guerillas which dates back to the 1960s and the 1970s, there always has been outstanding politicians who champions for democracy and the rights of brazilians and one of the most popular politician at this time was aecio neves. antónio pedro de costa was also of great significance and this was in the 1970s.

there are some politicians who have made landmark achievements in their careers and this has greatly impacted on rio and brazil. without a doubt a politician who tops the list of some of the most influential politicians from brazil is the 35th president popularly known as lula. full names luiz lnacio lula da silva, h was a founder of the worker's party and had previously ran for the top post three unsuccessful times.

for the local and international roles he has played such as being on the frontline on tackling issues such as global warming, he has earned a place in the hearts of many. to show for this, he was ranked amount the most influential persons of 2010 and for this time, he is considered as one of the most successful politicians of his time. his cancer diagnosis had attempted to sideline him from active politics but after undergoing chemotherapy, he has since declared himself fit for politics once more.

for a long time there has been gender gaps existing which kept women afar from political seats and turned them to mere observers. the rise of women in politics in recent times however is phenomenal and the presence of dilma rousseff in politics just explains how real the presence of women in politics is. the number of women elected as mayors in rio de janeiro has been on a steady increase since 1996 and this trend has continued and is expected to reflect in the upcoming elections. the number of women who have expressed interest in elective posts already signifies this with approximately 700 women going for the posts generally in brazil.

the political system has been for a long period has been tainted with corruption and impunity. to counter this, the recent governments have attempted to work on the judicial system. justice can be expected from the courts and this offers new hopes for rio dwellers in their political system and brazilians in general.

there are a number of challenges facing current politicians and if they are ever to attain the status of their predecessors, they must work to eliminate these challenges. one of these challenges is favelas and there are a number of factors about favelas that need to be addressed. from drug trade cartels, insecurity, poor sanitation and lighting, it would only require a sane and hardworking political system and politicians to overturn this.

with politicians who have proved themselves such as josé alencar, the dreams of alleviating all issues facing rio de janeiro and the wider brazil look attainable. time is the only factor left to tell of how these globally politicians will do for rio.
