the most important news relating to favelas are reported by all major newspapers in rio, however only a few specialized news sources can provide an in-depth look at the activities and events for each community - a valuable source of news about rio's favelas are the news agencies and blogs maintained both by newspapers, city programs, and by some of the residents of the communities.

the agência de notícias das favelas - anf, launched in january 2001 as a community project, was soon recognized by reuters as the first news agency from undeveloped communities in the world.    in 2005 agência de notícias das favelas officially became a ngo, with the objective of improving the lives of favela residents via the establishment of a news network.  anf published a print newspaper - called 'A Voz da Favela' (the voice of the favela) it prints about 50 thousand copies per month.

the polícia pacificadora - upp is the police force in charge of occupying favelas during the pacification process. the force maintains a webpage called 'acontece' (it happens) posting news relating to all pacified communities on this link, available both in portuguese and in english.
