at a glance

located on the eastern side of the city, guanabara is opened by the pão de açúcar mountain, at its western tip, and goes on to stretch an impressive 31 kilometers long and 28 kilometers wide.

discovered by the portuguese, in 1502, the bay was originally mistook for the mouth of a river, which is what gave the city the name of rio de janeiro.

home to some of the most famous sites of the region, the bay connects rio de janeiro to neighboring city, niterói with the 13 kilometers long niterói- rio bridge, which is one of the highlights of the bay.

guanabara bay is home to some of the most famous and important islands in rio de janeiro.       arrow-back      arrow-forward
