across from brocoió, one of on the many piers
that later became the 'ponte da saudade' joão da nação benguella,
an african slave, would sit every night.
joão was waiting for the ships carrying the
new slaves from africa, and begging the orixás, african deities,
for his beloved son loreano to be one one of the ships, so that
they could be reunited.
however, loreano never arrived, and one
night, during an inexplicable brightness, joão vanished and was
never seen again.
